I’ve never really been the type of girl who regularly uses fake tan, even when I was in my late teens and my friends would get bronzed up before a night out, I would most of the time just embrace my paleness except for the odd occasion when I was feeling a little ‘extra’. In a way I kind of had ‘the fear’ of turning out orange and/or patchy and looking worse than I did to begin with, so that’s what put me off completely.
Then last year I decided I wanted to have a go again and try out a couple of different brands after seeing some different ones popping up on social media, but it didn’t last long as I couldn’t be bothered with how much effort it took i.e the waiting for it to dry, trying not to get it on my clothes or bed sheets, turning into a tiger bread when it started to come off etc etc… But now this has all changed.
Recently I was lucky enough to be picked by Influenster to receive the Rimmel London Sun Shimmer voxbox and let me tell you it has completely changed my mind on fake tan and I am hooked. Never before have I really seen why people love to be beautifully bronzed when they haven’t been on holiday, until now.
The box contained 3 different self-tanning products from the range including a self tan mousse, self tan lotion and an instant tan all in the shade medium matte. Of course, before trying any of the products each time I followed my usual pre-tan routine of showering, shaving my legs and exfoliating all over as best as I could, being extra vigorous around my knees, elbows, ankles and anywhere else that’s a little bit harder to smooth over. I then went in with my tanning mitt and got to work.
My usual go-to tanning product is a self-tan mousse as I find them the easiest to work with to achieve a streak-free finish, so this was the first product I put to the test out of the 3 I had to choose from. It was so quick and easy to use and I quickly realised that the medium shade was perfect for me as I could look just slightly sun-kissed or all out ‘just been to Barbados for a month’ bronze, perfect. The biggest bonus aside from it being really quick and easy to apply is that it dries within 2 minutes of you applying it, so there is no chance of getting it on any of your clothes and bed sheets, YES! My legs felt really smooth and soft along with looking beautifully and naturally bronzed once I was finished. It doesn’t end there either, it lasted really nicely throughout the week and even when it did fade, it faded evenly across my body so there was no tiger bread stage either, I mean can you get a better result than that? Well except an actual holiday maybe…
Next up we have the self-tan lotion with chia oil. I was a bit weary of this, with it being a lotion and I usually just go for a mousse, but either way I was still looking forward to putting it to the test, especially after the great results of the first product and I was pleasantly surprised too. Just like the mousse it was really easy to apply, easily buildable, transfer and water resistant after drying super quick and with the added bonus of it being an extra moisturising formula thanks to the added chia oil. This one didn’t last quite as long as the mousse but still faded nice and evenly and you can actually use this one once a week for an all-year-round tan.
Last of all we have the instant tan. I actually haven’t tried this one just yet but after the results of the other two I’m sure it will live up to expectations when the time comes. This one would be perfect if you had a special occasion, night out or event to attend but just wanted your fake tan for that and that only which is exactly what I’m saving mine for. It claims again be a natural looking tan which is water and transfer resistant, quick drying but this time washes off easily with soap and water.
All in all this is definitely my new favourite range of fake tan and it has actually made me really enjoy being beautifully bronzed without the holiday. There isn’t a single fault with any of it and it ticks all the right boxes, taking all of ‘the fear’ away. I have noticed there’s also a gradual ‘in shower’ tan within the range so I may just have to pick that one up to try too. After all with the prices being £6.99 and £7.99 you can’t really go wrong!
What’s your favourite range of fake tan? Do you think you might pick up some Sun Shimmer to try?
